Does NSPIRE require a refrigerator and stove?

Yes — a missing refrigerator or missing primary cooking appliance is a citable deficiency, as is a fridge too damaged to safely store food or a range that won't ignite or produce heat. If a microwave is the primary cooking appliance, damage to it is cited as severe.

What counts as a food preparation area under NSPIRE?

A functional space to prepare food — present, undamaged, and adequate. 'Not present' and 'not functionally adequate' are separate citable items, and food storage space (cabinets/pantry) is checked under its own standard.

Is one dead burner an NSPIRE fail?

It's citable, but conditionally: one burner out with at least one other working burner is moderate. A range, cooktop, or oven that won't ignite or produce heat at all is severe — which carries NSPIRE's 24-hour correction clock.

Kitchens Under NSPIRE: What Inspectors Check

The kitchen carries 19 citable items — the most of any single room — because every appliance and fixture has its own standard. Most citations here are "works, but barely" conditions landlords stopped noticing years ago.

What inspectors actually check

Cooking — every burner

Range, cooktop, and oven must ignite and produce heat; burners get tested individually. Damaged or missing components that make the appliance unsafe are cited separately.

Cold storage

Refrigerator present, holding temperature, components functional. Food prep area and food storage space are checked as their own standards.

The sink, thoroughly

Present, draining, secured to the wall, hot and cold both controllable, water staying in the basin. Plus the room-adjacent standards: GFCI within six feet (see electrical), lighting, and leaks below.

Prep pattern that works: run every burner and the oven to heat, open the fridge with a thermometer, fill and drain the sink, rock the sink and the range — loose installs cite. Fifteen minutes, and the kitchen is the room you stop worrying about.
